Travel alert issued by the US for Sinaloa and Sonora

The United States Embassy in Mexico is warning against travel to Sinaloa and Sonora due to the “potential for confrontations between criminal organizations and Mexican security forces” following the arrest of infamous drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero.

According to the alert, the current Department of State’s Travel Advisory  for Sinaloa is Level 4: Do not travel due to crime and kidnapping. The Travel Advisory for Sonora is Level 3: Reconsider travel due to crime and kidnapping.

“Criminal organization assassinations and territorial disputes can result in bystanders being injured or killed,” officials said in the alert.

The U.S. government also warned of a possible increase in security in both Sinaloa and Sonora.

Caro Quintero, who was behind the killing of a U.S. DEA agent in 1985, was captured on July 15 by Mexican forces nearly a decade after walking out of a Mexican prison and returning to drug trafficking, according to the Mexican government’s national arrest registry.

Caro Quintero remains under indictment in Los Angeles for the crime. He was on the FBI’s most wanted list, with a $20 million reward for his capture through the State Department’s Narcotics Rewards Program.

A travel advisory was issued earlier this month warning of travel to Baja California due to the arrest of another cartel leader in that area.

Personal opinion

These warnings against traveling for states of Sinaloa and Sonora for sure will be perjudicial to our country since many US citizens and also latin people living in the US would decide to stop coming to Mexico, affecting tourism, economy and all that comes within the flow of people crossing the border.

The oficial page of Mexico´s government (2015) states that 1,000,000 people cross the border daily, in a documented manner, in both directions, 300,000 vehicles cross the border daily (70,000 cargo trucks) and all in all the region generates 21% of Mexico's GDP. Together, the 10 border states represent the 4th largest economy in the world.

The information above just proves the importance of migration in our country, so it is imperative that the situation regarding criminal organizations improves so the US eliminates the alert and wouldn´t affects us in a major scale.
